Truck driver charged with threatening president after crash near White House

The authorities have charged a truck driver with threatening the president following a crash near the White House.

Law enforcement officials have charged the driver, who was arrested after colliding with security barriers near the White House, with threatening to kill or harm the US president, in addition to other offenses.

The US park police, who have jurisdiction over the area where the barriers were struck, identified the suspect as 19-year-old Sai Varshith Kandula from Chesterfield, Missouri, situated just west of St. Louis. According to a statement from the park police, Kandula was charged with threatening to kill, kidnap, or cause harm to the president, vice-president, or a relative.

In addition to the aforementioned charges, the authorities also charged the driver with assault using a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a vehicle, and various other criminal offenses. Furthermore, he faced allegations of carrying a Nazi flag.

Some individuals on social media expressed skepticism in response to the accusation concerning the Nazi flag and Kandula’s identity. However, experts argue that people of color in the United States are increasingly being attracted to far-right political ideologies and groups that espouse white supremacist Nazi beliefs. This attraction is attributed to factors such as misinformation, especially prevalent online, the influence of authoritarian forces from their families’ country of origin, and the proximity to whiteness in the US, which places more emphasis on power dynamics rather than solely skin color.

A LinkedIn profile that corresponds to Kandula’s name and indicates Chesterfield as the hometown, along with a high school graduation date in 2022, details experience in computer coding and a background in data analytics.

Witnesses reported that the crash occurred around 10pm Eastern Time on Monday. The driver, according to their accounts, repeatedly collided with the security barriers located in Lafayette Square, near the White House grounds.

District of Columbia police detained the driver of the truck in Washington DC, determining it to be safe. Following the crash, a swastika flag, symbolizing the Nazi regime’s genocide of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, was discovered inside the rented truck.

Photographs captured the flag and plastic evidence bags arranged on the road after the collision. According to a witness from Reuters, investigators located the flag, which seemingly originated from within the truck.
